For the first time, Australian Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft have taken to the skies with a full complement of weapons. The two fully laden F-35As last month took off from RAAF Base Darwin as part of Exercise Arnhem Thunder 21, according the Department of Defence website. Commanding Officer No. 35 Squadron Wing Commander Matthew Harper said the F-35A was the only Western fighter jet that could carry both internal and external ordnance.

In more news from Land Forces 2021, Babcock and Team SABRE have been down-selected for Land 125 Phase 4. ADM understands the Commonwealth is also considering other proposals. Team SABRE is a consortium including Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia, Nova Systems Australia & NZ, and BAE Systems Australia.

The Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) E-7A Wedgetail aircraft has participated and demonstrated its capabilities during Exercise Pacific Edge 21. The airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft deployed to the US in April. It took part in the multi-faceted, air-combat exercise with other partners in Hawaii, US.

After a near 40-year career in the Royal Australian Air Force that has taken her to great heights, Canberra-based Air Vice-Marshal Cath Roberts is now focused even higher as the incoming head of Defence’s Space Division. Air Vice-Marshal Roberts will be the first person to lead the Space Division, which has been established to reflect the Defence’s mission to operate in all areas.

The Jericho Smart Sensing Lab at the University of Sydney Nano Institute has developed a prototype sensor system for the Royal Australian Air Force that mimics the brain’s neural architecture to deliver high-tech sensing technology for the Australian Defence Force. Dubbed MANTIS, the system under development integrates a traditional camera with a visual system inspired by neurobiological architectures.

The government’s 2020 defence strategic update provided refreshing clarity about Australia’s deteriorating strategic environment and the need for new military capabilities to address it. These include long-range strike capabilities to impose greater cost on potential great-power adversaries at greater range from Australia. The government also included a shopping list of those capabilities giving a broad outline of schedule and the scale of investment.

Development of sense-and-avoid capabilities will be included in the next increment of the MQ-4C Triton HALE UAV. Northrop Grumman has received a prototype and risk-reduction contract from the USN to integrate sense-and-avoid (SAA) capabilities with the MQ-4C Triton high-altitude long-endurance UAV. The value of the deal was undisclosed.

For four weeks, the Royal Australian Air Force will be conducting exercise Arnehm Thunder 21 (AT21) from the RAAF Base Darwin and Tindal. From May 17 to June 15, the Air Force will deploy a collection of aircraft and over 500 personnel for the exercise who will be arriving in the week prior to commencement.

The U.S. Air Force has released an impressive photo of a joint flight of Hawaii Air National Guard F-22 Raptor fighter jet and Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail aircraft during the Pacific Edge 21 exercise. According to a recent service news release, total Force Airmen from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam completed a multi-faceted, air-combat exercise April 22, flying more than one hundred sorties alongside partners from the Royal Australian Air Force and other U.S.-based units.
