WASHINGTON — The Department of the Air Force on Sept. 8 awarded Northrop Grumman a $13.3 billion contract to develop the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) intercontinental ballistic missile. The GBSD is the follow-on to the Minuteman 3 ICBM that first became operational in 1970. “Modernizing the nuclear strategic triad is a top priority of our military,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in a statement. “It’s key to our nation’s defense.”

US Air Force gives update on B-21 Raider stealth bomber The US Air Force official managing the B-21 Raider stealth bomber programme has offered an update on its progress. The bomber, being developed and manufactured by Northrop Grumman, is beginning to “look like an airplane,” Randy Walden said. The company is currently building the test aircraft at Plant 42 in Palmdale, California and the Air Force hopes it will be ready for its first flight by the end of next year.
